From the sprawling Sleeping Bear sand dunes formed millennia ago to some of our beer that’s aged for a year, it takes time for good things to happen. Our story is no different.
It all began when the entrepreneurial Carlson and Czaplicka families signed the deed to the historic, century-old Old German Restaurant in downtown Ann Arbor, Michigan.Within its dark, den-like interior, Grizzly Peak Brewing Company arose in 1995, where brews (created by brewersRon Jeffries and Mike Hall) and food of uncommon quality were the focus. A couple years later The Carlson, Czaplicka, and Lobdell families purchased a deserted candy factory in downtown Traverse City, Michigan. Within its cavernous brick walls,North Peak Brewing Company was established in 1997.
At the same time, Ron and Laurie Jeffries created Jolly Pumpkin Artisan Ales. Ron and Laurie had the vision to create the first and only brewery that is 100% dedicated to barrel aged, bottle fermented beer. Their expertise in this area and success is unmatched.
As the days passed into years, these three enterprises fueled their passion for brewing and led everyone down paths that would one day cross again. The mutual respect and shared passion for beer led everyone together to create Northern United Brewing Company in 2008. It is truly a collaboration between passionate, like-minded partners.
Headquartered in Dexter, Michigan,these great minds of brewing recruited the final full-time member of their inner circle in August 2009 — Master Brewer Mike Hall (who had consulted on numerous other endeavors).
Their mission was simple: continue to make beers of outstanding art and flavor. Making beer is a labor and love, and everyone at NUBC strives to create beers to lighten the spiritand soothe the soul. Sharing the joy to the betterment of mankind is the most that anyone at NUBC could hope to accomplish.
The craft beers of NUBC use the finest, hand-made quality using ingredients borne of the northern Michigan landscape. This is why Northern United Brewing Company brews with Michigan malted-grain, hops and water whenever possible.
Ron Jeffries has continued to brew all of the Jolly Pumpkin artisan ales and his passion for perfection is unwavering.
The beginning of NUBC’s creation, and the grand collaboration, allowed Mike and Ron to collaborate on new recipes that drew from their nearly 50 years of combined brewing experience.
In late 2009, at their new, secluded state-of-the art brewing facility on Old Mission Peninsula, the first bottles of Siren Amber Ale, Diabolical IPA and Majestic American Wheat rolled off the bottling line. The higher Alcohol By Volume (ABV) beers of Grizzly Peak shortly followed: Berserker Heavy Duty Ale, Hellcat Double IPA and Humongous Imperial Red. Ron Jeffries, Mike Hall, Jon Carlson, and Greg Lobdell continue to work closely together to develop NUBC's portfolio of award winning beer, wine and spirits.
These beers resonated with casual beer drinkers and die-hard aficionados alike in a similar way that the extensive lineup of unique Belgian farmhouse ales from Jolly Pumpkin has done for the past decade. This warm reception, as well as that for our Civilized Spirits and Bonafide Wines, is already adding layers to our story. A story we hope will always be told over one of our beers, spirits or wines with one ever-present theme:
